Background
Seyyed Al Shohada mosque is a Shia place of worship in Pakdasht, a city in Tehran Province approximately 45 kilometres south-east of the capital. The mosque became the focal point of an international human rights case in April 2026 when three teenagers and an adult woman were reported to face imminent execution following convictions linked to a fire at the site.
Hengaw and HRANA, the two primary Iran Human Rights monitoring organisations, reported that all four defendants were denied access to independent legal counsel during proceedings. The UN Special Rapporteur on Iran and several Western governments have called for a stay of execution pending a fair retrial, citing violations of international fair-trial standards, including Iran's own constitutional provisions on legal representation.
"Seyyed Al Shohada" translates from Arabic as "Master of the Martyrs", a Shia epithet for Imam Hussein ibn Ali, whose death at Karbala in 680 CE is central to Shia Islamic theology. Mosques bearing the name are common across Iran and the broader Shia world.
