Why is Iran executing minors over a mosque fire?
Background
Matin Mohammadi is an Iranian defendant who was a minor at the time of the alleged offence connected to a fire at the Seyyed Al Shohada mosque in Pakdasht, Tehran Province. As of late April 2026, he faces imminent execution alongside co-defendants Ehsan Hosseinipour Hesarloo, Erfan Amiri, and the adult Maryam Hodavand. Human rights organisations Hengaw and HRANA reported that all four were denied independent legal counsel during proceedings.
The UN Special Rapporteur on Iran has called for an immediate stay of execution and a fair retrial, citing violations of international standards on juvenile justice. Under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child — which Iran has ratified — the execution of individuals for offences committed as minors is prohibited. Iran remains among a small number of states that continues to impose capital punishment in such cases.
Hengaw and HRANA are the primary NGOs documenting the Pakdasht case. Both organisations have published the defendants' names and legal status; their reporting forms the evidentiary basis for international advocacy on the case.
