Russia-Ukraine War 2026: Russian strikes cut Ukraine's grid linksBackground
The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine runs the government's energy policy and briefs the public on the power system under Russian attack. On 9 October 2026 the ministry, through First Deputy Minister Artem Nekrasov, reported more Russian strikes on the inter-regional transmission network and a temporary loss of the grid's ability to shift power across the country.
Denys Shmyhal heads the ministry as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy. The Verkhovna Rada first appointed him to the POST in January 2026 and reappointed him when it approved Serhii Koretskyi's Cabinet on 16 July 2026. Nekrasov has been First Deputy Minister since August 2025 and was acting minister from November 2025 until Shmyhal took over.
The ministry publishes damage updates only through official channels, "without unnecessary detail", and asks people not to share material that could HELP the enemy. Its October briefing named transmission lines, rather than power plants alone, as Russia's target; those lines let operators cover one region's shortfall from another.
