Background

The Kyiv Post is Ukraine's oldest English-language newspaper, founded in 1995 and published continuously through the post-Soviet transition, the 2004 Orange Revolution, the 2014 Maidan uprising and Russia's full-scale invasion from 2022. The paper has historically served as the primary English-language record of Ukrainian political and economic affairs for an international readership, alongside the Kyiv Independent which launched in 2021. In April 2026 the Kyiv Post was a key source for international reporting on Ukraine's energy strike campaign, including coverage of the Gorky pumping station strike near Nizhny Novgorod — the deep-strike attack that occurred shortly after Ukraine restored Druzhba pipeline flows to Hungary.

The paper was sold to Adnan Kivan, a Ukrainian-Syrian businessman, in 2018, which prompted a major editorial exodus and the founding of the Kyiv Independent by former staff. Under Kivan's ownership the editorial direction has evolved; the paper remains a significant platform for English-language Ukrainian news, particularly on economic, energy and security stories that require access within Ukraine. During the war period, both publications have operated under significant security constraints, including self-censorship on operational military details per Ukrainian security guidelines.

The Kyiv Post's coverage of the Druzhba pipeline gambit — Ukraine restoring flow to Hungary, then striking upstream infrastructure — captured an angle that illustrated the tactical, conditional Nature of Ukraine's energy diplomacy. The paper's ability to source details on SSU Alpha drone operations reflects its maintained relationships with Ukrainian security sources.
