Background

Kamaran Island lies in the Red Sea about 60km northwest of Hodeidah, off Yemen's western coast. Houthi-affiliated media outlet Al Masirah said Saudi-led Coalition strikes on 24 July 2026 hit telecommunications facilities and the island itself, with a woman injured; the coalition disputes those specifics.

At 108 square kilometres, Kamaran is the largest shelf island off Yemen's coast, home to around 3,500 people who fish for pearls and dried fish. It is Houthi-controlled, part of the stretch of Yemen's Red Sea coastline the group has held since seizing much of northern Yemen, and has historically served as a quarantine and administrative post on the Red Sea pilgrim route. Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said the day's strikes targeted sites used to threaten commercial shipping and that Hodeidah port itself was not hit.

Kamaran's disputed status is typical of this stretch of the war: strikes and their effects are claimed by one side and denied by the other, with little independent verification available for a small island with limited external monitoring. It sits alongside Jazan and Al-Shuqaiq among the contested points in the same 24 July exchange.
