Pandemics and Biosecurity: Ebola reaches Sud-Ubangi by river boatBackground
Jean-René Galekwa Vundawe is the interim governor of Sud-Ubangi, a province in DR Congo's FAR north-west. His public profile rests on the Bundibugyo Ebola epidemic, which reached his province in September 2026 and made it one of seven DR Congo provinces with cases.
Two neighbouring states, the Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic, lie across the Ubangi from his province, and river boats link it to Kisangani and the interior. That geography gives the governor's office a cross-border dimension that inland provinces lack.
His response runs against a Labour dispute. Many DR Congo provinces leave doctors off the state payroll, and Sud-Ubangi's doctors struck over it as the province confirmed its 2 cases.
