- How did the Tigray war affect Ethiopia's health system?
- The 2020 to 2022 Tigray conflict caused mass displacement and significant damage to health infrastructure in northern Ethiopia, leaving laboratory capacity gaps that programmes like ARILAC are designed to help address.
- Has Ethiopia ever imposed a total internet blackout during a conflict?
- Yes. During the Tigray conflict (2020-2022), Ethiopia imposed prolonged communications shutdowns across the Tigray, Amhara, and Afar regions. The blackouts were among the longest documented in sub-Saharan Africa and are now cited as a precedent by analysts tracking information controls in other conflict zones.Source: Lowdown iran-conflict-2026 Update 21 May 2026
Background
Ethiopia is the most populous landlocked country in the world, with an estimated 130 million people (2024). Addis Ababa is the capital and serves simultaneously as the headquarters of the African Union and Africa CDC, making it the continent's principal diplomatic hub. Ethiopia has the second-largest population in Africa after Nigeria and a rapidly growing urban economy, though it remains one of the lower-income countries by GDP per Capita. The country experienced a devastating civil war in the Tigray region between 2020 and 2022, resulting in significant civilian casualties and mass displacement. A peace agreement was signed in November 2022. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has governed since 2018 and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019, though his administration's conduct during the Tigray conflict has attracted widespread international criticism.
Ethiopia hosted the launch of ARILAC (Advancing Regional Integrated Laboratory Capacity for AMR Control) in Addis Ababa on 6 May 2026 . As one of eight AU member states selected for the four-year programme, Ethiopia participates both as a beneficiary and as the geographic centre of the initiative, given that Africa CDC's headquarters are in Addis Ababa. The country's public health infrastructure was significantly stressed by the Tigray conflict; rebuilding laboratory capacity in conflict-affected northern regions is among the longer-term challenges the ARILAC programme must navigate.
