Everything in the finding turns on that clade distinction. A clade is a branch of a virus family defined by mutations accumulated since a shared ancestor, and MERS clades are not interchangeable in the way that word suggests. Clade B is the lineage behind the human cases and hospital clusters on the Arabian peninsula. Clade C circulates widely in African camels and has produced almost no recorded human disease, despite herding and milking practices that put people in daily contact with the animals. That gap is why the lineage in the herd matters more than the number of infected camels. If clade B displaces or mixes with clade C along the Nile, the exposure Africa has tolerated for years stops being harmless.

GLEWS+ issued two ratings that look contradictory. Further introduction and spread in those camel populations: likely, minor overall risk, low confidence. Public-health risk of spillover to people exposed to infected camels or their products, should clade B establish: high, at moderate confidence. The first describes how likely the thing is, the second how bad it would be. Collapsing them into one headline is how a fragment of sequence becomes a pandemic scare.

The document names what would settle it: whole-genome confirmation. The current sequences are incomplete, so nobody can yet separate sustained clade B circulation from a transient detection, or rule out recombination between the two clades, the outcome that would matter most and is hardest to prove from partial reads.

MERS earns its surveillance line on lethality rather than on spread. The global record stands at 2,637 laboratory-confirmed human MERS cases with a crude case-fatality ratio near 37% 2. WHO's Eastern Mediterranean office logged two fresh Gulf cases and one Saudi death on 1 June, in the usual pattern of camel contact and with no onward transmission . No human case attaches to this detection either. The signal is in the animals, and stays there unless someone sequences enough of them to say otherwise.
