Key takeaway

Rampersad's status moved from missing to believed dead, taking the cumulative American toll to 18.

Sergeant Angel S. Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park in New York, was carried as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown for four days after the 17 July attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. On Tuesday 21 July the Pentagon updated his status to believed to be deceased 1.

That is a presumptive finding, pending recovery and identification. It sits apart from the confirmed deaths of Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, and First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, 25, who were named the day before . Rampersad served with the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defence Artillery Regiment, the unit that operates ground-based air defence at the base. The cumulative American death toll in this war now stands at 18 2.

Our briefing of 21 July put that figure at 17, following the Pentagon's count at the time . It is 18. Update #157 carried a correction on the same running number, which says the toll is moving faster than the confirmations rather than that the confirmations were wrong.

The unidentified remains CENTCOM recovered at Muwaffaq Salti on 19 July have still not been publicly tied to any named soldier. Rampersad was 28, and he served in the ground-based air defence that the missiles fired at Muwaffaq Salti were sent to get past.

Deep Analysis

In plain English

Sergeant Angel Rampersad was a US soldier stationed at a base in Jordan that was attacked on 17 July. Straight after the attack, the military could not find him and listed him as missing. Four days later, on 21 July, the Pentagon updated his status to "believed to be deceased." This is different from being officially confirmed dead: the military believes he was killed, but has not yet recovered and formally identified his remains, so the finding is described as presumptive rather than confirmed. This brings the total number of American troops killed in the war with Iran to 18. Two other soldiers killed in the same attack, Private Isabella Gonzales and 1st Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, were confirmed dead immediately, unlike Rampersad's case.

Deep Analysis
Root Causes

The Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown classification remains open under Pentagon practice until a service member's remains are recovered and identified, which is why Rampersad's updated status carries the qualifier "believed to be deceased" rather than a confirmed finding.

That distinction explains the four-day gap between the 17 July attack and the 21 July update: Gonzales and Feehan were confirmed killed in action on the day itself, while Rampersad was reported missing until the Pentagon judged the available evidence sufficient to change the classification, still short of physical confirmation.

What could happen next?
  • Consequence

Rampersad's presumptive status will likely remain officially unresolved until his remains are recovered and identified, which could take considerably longer than the four days already elapsed.
