Key takeaway

Rampersad's status moved from missing to believed dead, taking the cumulative American toll to 18.

Sergeant Angel S. Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park in New York, was carried as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown for four days after the 17 July attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. On Tuesday 21 July the Pentagon updated his status to believed to be deceased 1.

That is a presumptive finding, pending recovery and identification. It sits apart from the confirmed deaths of Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, and First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, 25, who were named the day before . Rampersad served with the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defence Artillery Regiment, the unit that operates ground-based air defence at the base. The cumulative American death toll in this war now stands at 18 2.

Our briefing of 21 July put that figure at 17, following the Pentagon's count at the time . It is 18. Update #157 carried a correction on the same running number, which says the toll is moving faster than the confirmations rather than that the confirmations were wrong.

The unidentified remains CENTCOM recovered at Muwaffaq Salti on 19 July have still not been publicly tied to any named soldier. Rampersad was 28, and he served in the ground-based air defence that the missiles fired at Muwaffaq Salti were sent to get past.

Deep Analysis

In plain English

Sergeant Angel Rampersad was a US soldier stationed at a base in Jordan that was attacked on 17 July. Straight after the attack, the military could not find him and listed him as missing. Four days later, on 21 July, the Pentagon updated his status to "believed to be deceased." This is different from being officially confirmed dead: the military believes he was killed, but has not yet recovered and formally identified his remains, so the finding is described as presumptive rather than confirmed. This brings the total number of American troops killed in the war with Iran to 18. Two other soldiers killed in the same attack, Private Isabella Gonzales and 1st Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, were confirmed dead immediately, unlike Rampersad's case.

Deep Analysis
Root Causes

The Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown classification remains open under Pentagon practice until a service member's remains are recovered and identified, which is why Rampersad's updated status carries the qualifier "believed to be deceased" rather than a confirmed finding.

That distinction explains the four-day gap between the 17 July attack and the 21 July update: Gonzales and Feehan were confirmed killed in action on the day itself, while Rampersad was reported missing until the Pentagon judged the available evidence sufficient to change the classification, still short of physical confirmation.

What could happen next?
  • Consequence

Rampersad's presumptive status will likely remain officially unresolved until his remains are recovered and identified, which could take considerably longer than the four days already elapsed.

Different Perspectives
Spain's LNG terminal operators
Spain's LNG terminal operators
Spain's 9,145 GWh terminal inventory is the largest single stock in the EU LNG network, an option value that can reroute cargoes wherever the winter strip pays best rather than a cavern gas obligation tied to a fixed date. That flexibility matters more as Germany's cavern shortfall pushes more of the winter security question onto import infrastructure.
European Commission
European Commission
Brussels holds the bloc to 90% on a flexible window while Germany, holding roughly a quarter of EU storage capacity, tracks toward missing its own lower 80% figure by 21 points. A national shortfall this size in the anchor market matters more to bloc security than the flexible timetable alone can absorb.
French power exporters and CRE
French power exporters and CRE
French day-ahead rose in step with Germany but by less, reopening a EUR 7-17 premium that makes northward export flows commercially attractive again after the EUR 43.09 discount evaporated in days. CRE separately authorised RTE and Enedis to buy flexibility locally, betting the coming winter's binding constraint is grid congestion rather than a shortage of firm capacity.
TTF trading desk
TTF trading desk
A visible national shortfall like Germany's 21-point gap is a directional signal, not noise, for a desk holding the summer-winter spread. TTF's flat EUR 58-60 range through this week's German price swings says the market has not yet chosen to reprice refill risk into the front of the curve.
German cavern and CCGT operators
German cavern and CCGT operators
German caverns kept buying prompt gas at TTF near EUR 58-60 through the inversion; the wind collapse to 2.4 GW then flipped the spark spread to plus EUR 29 and put turbines back in the same queue. Every day turbines win that bid, injection at a third of the 877 GWh/day pace needed falls further behind.
Slovakia
Slovakia
Slovakia says it dropped its hold-out on the 21st sanctions package only after Ursula von der Leyen personally signed written gas-price and supply guarantees. The Council of the European Union's own 17,238-character release on the package names neither Slovakia nor any guarantee, leaving Bratislava's account unconfirmed by the institutional record.
