ERCOT closed Batch Zero interconnection submissions on 24 July, with classification results on the Texas data-centre queue due by 7 August.

Key takeaway

ERCOT publishes its Batch Zero classification by 7 August, the first audited count of the Texas queue.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the grid operator running most of the Texas electricity market, closed Batch Zero interconnection submissions on 24 July, with classification results due by 7 August 1. Batch Zero is the first tranche under the large-load interconnection process created after Texas legislated on data-centre connections, and classification sorts the applications by how far advanced each project actually is.

ERCOT is the outlier among the six operators that filed generation-adequacy reports this fortnight. It sits outside FERC's jurisdiction, being a grid deliberately kept inside one state's borders, and it has courted large loads rather than rationed them. Where Ofgem proposes a deposit to make speculation expensive, Texas is instead going to publish who is serious.

The Texas Public Utility Commission approved this study process in June , and the classification results are its first output. Nobody believes the whole Texas queue will be built. The results due on 7 August produce the first audited estimate of how much of it might be, in a market that charges nothing to deter a speculative applicant. Whatever share survives classification becomes the reference point every other jurisdiction's queue estimate gets measured against.

Deep Analysis

In plain English

Texas has its own electricity grid operator, ERCOT, separate from the rest of the United States. Many companies have applied to connect huge data centres to that grid, but nobody knows how much of that demand is genuine versus speculative applications that will never actually get built. ERCOT just closed the window for grid companies to submit detailed information on these projects, and will announce by 7 August which ones it classifies as real.

Deep Analysis
Escalation

The scale of Texas's data-centre queue has not eased; ERCOT's own large-load interconnection page put the total queue at 438 GW as of late May 2026, with over 300 GW of that not yet having submitted studies, meaning most of the queue remains unconfirmed pending the 7 August classification.

What could happen next?
  • Meaning

Batch Zero's 7 August classification results will be the first hard test of how much of Texas's data-centre interconnection queue is genuine demand versus speculative applications.

Texas is about to publish the first hard count of how much of its data-centre queue is real, in a market that has priced grid access lightly.
Different Perspectives
NVIDIA
NVIDIA
NVIDIA told the Securities and Exchange Commission on 26 August it had signed memorandums aiming to mobilise over $500bn for buyers' equipment purchases, then said in the same filing the arrangements may not become definitive. It may also carry limited residual-value risk on the equipment itself.
IREN Limited
IREN Limited
IREN signed $2.4bn of financing on 25 August that only releases cash once its Mackenzie GPU servers are accepted, and only through 31 December 2026. A shipping delay from here now creates a funding problem as well as a revenue one.
Energy Commission (Malaysia)
Energy Commission (Malaysia)
Malaysia's Energy Commission recorded data centres at 9.3% of national power in one hot week in August, against a 7% year-to-date average, and is projecting 31% of peninsular demand by 2035. It wants roughly 9 GW of new gas-fired capacity by 2032 to cover the gap.

Singapore's EDB and IMDA rationed 200 MW across four operators on 21 August and followed with a tropical liquid-cooling standard six days later, fixing the terms before construction starts. The agencies will decide within 18 to 24 months whether to run a third call.

The Legal Resources Centre put the water and power draw of two approved Cape Town Equinix sites in public, at roughly 4.4 billion litres and 1.4 to 1.5 billion kWh a year, because the city and the operator would not. It wants a cumulative assessment before any more of the five approvals proceed.

Brazil's energy ministry published Redata's five conditions after the Senate passed PL 278/2026 on 1 September, betting a repeatable annual water test enforces cooling design better than a one-off approval. Redata now needs President Lula's signature before any of it takes effect.
