Background
YANOS is the Yaroslavl Oil Refinery, one of Russia's largest inland petroleum processing facilities with a rated capacity of approximately 15 million tonnes per year. On 28 March 2026, Ukrainian FP-1 attack drones hit YANOS, igniting fires across at least three sections of the facility. The strike was coordinated with FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile attacks on the Promsintez explosives factory in Chapayevsk.
The YANOS strike contributed directly to Russia's decision to impose a gasoline export ban from 1 April through 31 July 2026, with Yaroslavl, Moscow, and Ryazan refineries all cited as facing cascade disruptions following the earlier Ust-Luga terminal strikes. A child was killed in Yaroslavl city during the drone attack, marking one of the war's first confirmed civilian casualties from a Ukrainian strike at this depth inside Russia.
YANOS processes Urals crude supplied via pipeline, converting it into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and fuel oil. Its disruption removes significant domestic refining capacity precisely when Russia's Baltic export channel has been simultaneously attacked.
