Did Venture Global divert EU-contracted LNG cargoes to Asia?
Background
Venture Global LNG is a US Liquefied Natural Gas developer and exporter headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, founded in 2014. It operates Calcasieu Pass in Louisiana (first LNG cargo 2022) and the larger Plaquemines facility. Together they make Venture Global currently the second-largest US LNG exporter by volume. The company went public on the NYSE in January 2025.
Venture Global captures part of the 45% year-on-year rise in US LNG deliveries to the EU recorded by ACER for the period leading into April 2026, as the bloc diversifies away from Russian pipeline gas and Russian LNG spot contracts banned from 25 April 2026. US LNG now accounts for 30% of EU gas imports by volume. Its commercial reliability remains under scrutiny after 2022-23 cargo diversions to Asia triggered litigation with European buyers including Shell and Repsol.
