Background
Paramount Skydance has agreed to dissolve its film-distribution joint venture with Universal Pictures, United International Pictures, as the remedy the European Commission required to clear its $110bn takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery under the Foreign Subsidies Regulation on 14 July 2026; a formal decision on the JV exit is due 22 July 2026, the same day the EU's AI Code of Practice sets its initial-signatory cutoff.
Universal Pictures is one of Hollywood's oldest continuously operating major studios, tracing its roots to 1912. It has sat inside NBCUniversal since Comcast took full ownership of the group in 2013, and its releases span tentpole franchises from Jurassic Park and Fast & Furious to Illumination's animated hits.
A joint-venture break-up as a merger remedy shows Brussels reaching for structural fixes, not just behavioural ones, when clearing large media consolidations. It underlines how deeply entangled major studios' distribution arrangements have become even between rival conglomerates, and how that entanglement now surfaces as a bargaining chip whenever one of them tries to get bigger.
