Tshopo is a province in north-eastern DR Congo. It recorded its first confirmed Bundibugyo Ebola cases in the week to 27 July 2026, one of two provinces, alongside South Kivu, newly reached as the outbreak's transmission widened to 48 of 140 health zones nationally.
Its three affected health zones logged five cases with an 80% case-fatality rate. Africa CDC attributes that figure to very late detection at the outbreak's geographic frontier, where no isolation beds existed yet, rather than to a more lethal strain of the virus. Its position at the outbreak's geographic frontier means the same capacity gaps that produced the high initial fatality rate, thin surveillance, few isolation beds, are likely to recur as transmission continues to spread.
