Shahrud

Shahrud is a city in Iran's Semnan province, roughly 400km east of Tehran. It is distinct from Shahrud Central Prison, the facility located there that carried out an execution on 1 August 2026: reporting on the prison describes that facility, not the city's own population or civic life.

On 1 August the facility put to death 20-year-old Arvin Kheirkhahan, held since January's unrest and convicted on the capital charge of moharebeh; his relatives received no warning and learned of his death only once told to collect the remains . City and facility share a name but not an identity, and that distinction, not the case itself, is what makes Shahrud a separate reference point from the wider province.
