Background

Saronic Technologies is one of three yards now building medium robot boats for the US Navy. The Navy ordered 30 medium uncrewed surface vessels on 29 September 2026 and split them evenly: ten each to Saronic, HII and Galliano Marine Services. Seven firms had demonstrated at SEA in May. Bids were scored on autonomy, design, schedule and cost, and the Navy's stated criteria did not mention weapons. Reports put the average price at about $40m a vessel; no per-yard value was published.

Saronic was founded in 2022 and is based in Austin, Texas, led by co-founder and chief executive Dino Mavrookas. Its smaller craft include the Spyglass, the Cutlass and the 24ft Corsair, which the company says has a 1,000-nautical-mile range and a top speed above 35 knots. In July 2026 it announced a site at Brownsville, Texas, for a planned $3.2bn shipyard, expected to be ready to build in 2028.

The Navy award moves Saronic from small autonomous craft into larger hulls at production rate. It beat rivals such as Birdon, which began building its own medium robot boat in Louisiana five days before the award but was not picked.
