Autonomous Systems: Land & Sea: Ukrainian USV destroys a Russian USVBackground
On 12 September 2026 the Sargan-3000, a Ukrainian robot boat, sank a Russian explosive drone boat in the Black Sea. The British assessment came in a UK Defence Intelligence update dated 7 October, which called this "almost certainly" the first time the two sides' SEA drones had fought each other directly. The same update rated the chance that the Russian boat carried any protection against drones as "highly unlikely".
The Sargan-3000 carries a mounted gun. The Ukrainian Navy says it used a 12.7mm Protector remote weapon station, a Kongsberg product, and described the clash as the first combat between two unmanned boats. It is a separate Ukrainian design from the better-known Magura and Sea Baby boats, which are built to strike ships and shore targets.
The Sargan-3000 matters because it is armed to fight other drones. A gun-armed SEA drone gives Ukraine a way to intercept Russian explosive boats at SEA before they reach ports or ships.
