Ousmane Dembélé

Ousmane Dembélé is one of European football's most gifted wide forwards, whose lightning pace and technical invention make him almost unplayable on his day. Born in Vernon, Normandy in 1997, he came through the Rennes academy before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2016. Barcelona paid a then world-record fee for a teenager (around €105 million) to sign him in 2017, but his CAMP Nou years were marked as much by injury absences as moments of brilliance. He returned to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in 2023 and flourished, contributing to PSG's sustained dominance in Ligue 1 and winning the Ballon d'Or, which recognised a consistency his Barcelona years never quite sustained. His career trajectory is one of the most compelling in world football: enormous early promise, a difficult middle chapter, and a late-twenties peak that has made him one of the most dangerous attackers in Europe.

Dembélé opened his account at the 2026 World Cup with France's third goal in a 3-0 win over Iraq in Philadelphia on 22 June, converting a Michael Olise cut-back with a powerful low finish in the 66th minute for his first goal at a major international tournament, having also set up France's second. He followed it with a hat-trick inside 25 minutes in France's group-stage finale against Norway on 26 June, rated by ESPN as the second-fastest hat-trick in World Cup history and enough on its own to see France through the group stage with a perfect nine points.

He added France's second goal in the quarter-final win over Morocco in Boston on 9 July, as France won 2-0 to reach the semi-finals and end the last African side's run in the tournament. Across the group and knockout stages Dembélé was among France's leading scorers and, alongside Kylian Mbappé, gave Didier Deschamps a blend of creativity and directness as France pursued a third World Cup title.
