Background
A mid-sized industrial city roughly 30 km south of Kramatorsk, Kostiantynivka sits on the M32 highway that connects the fallen city of Pokrovsk to the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk defensive anchor. Its capture would leave no fortified position between Russian forces and the twin cities. Pokrovsk fell in December 2025, making Kostiantynivka the next objective in Russia's eastward corridor.
Kostiantynivka is the frontline city absorbing the heaviest Russian assault pressure in Donetsk Oblast. Nine Russian assault actions struck across Pleshchiivka, Sofiivka and toward Illinivka in early March 2026 as part of the broader advance toward the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk twin cities. On 18 March, the Pokrovsk-Kostiantynivka corridor absorbed 72 assault actions at Pokrovsk and 46 at Kostiantynivka in the highest single-day combat total of 2026.
Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia counteroffensive forced Russia to redeploy elite airborne and naval infantry away from the Donetsk axis, temporarily easing pressure on Kostiantynivka. Whether that redeployment holds depends on how far Ukraine can push in the south before Russia stabilises its lines.
