Hugo Broos is a Belgian football manager best known for two stints coaching in Africa. As a player he won two Belgian league titles with Anderlecht and earned 24 caps for Belgium. His coaching career spanned clubs across Belgium, Turkey, and Greece before he pivoted to international management in Africa, leading Cameroon to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title.
Broos took charge of South Africa in March 2021 and qualified Bafana Bafana for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the country's first appearance since the 2010 home tournament. His farewell match, before a planned retirement, is the opening fixture of the 2026 World Cup against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on 11 June, making it a landmark occasion on both sides: a national homecoming for South Africa and a record-setting third opening match for the Azteca.
Broos built Bafana around pace and counter-attacking transitions, with forwards Percy Tau, Evidence Makgopa, and Lyle Foster central to his system.
