Drones: Industry & DefenceBackground
HNLMS Johan de Witt is a Dutch Rotterdam-class amphibious transport dock, hull number L801. Commissioned in 2007, the vessel can carry marines, landing craft, helicopters and unmanned aircraft, making it a flexible platform for Dutch and NATO amphibious operations.
Arctic trials completed by 30 March showed that the ship could support V-BAT drone operations at SEA. The Royal Netherlands Navy then brought 12 aircraft into operational service and plans to equip eight ships, placing Johan de Witt at the centre of the Dutch naval rollout.
The vessel's trial role gives it lasting relevance as a test platform for maritime surveillance systems. Belgium's September purchase of V-BAT aircraft means another nearby navy will operate the same system.
