Background
Harry Kane converted a 60th-minute penalty as England beat co-host Mexico 3-2 to reach the World Cup quarter-final against Norway in Miami on 11 July. It continued a rich knockout run: Kane scored twice as England eliminated DR Congo in the Round of 32 on 1 July, and had already become England's outright leading World Cup scorer with 11 goals after netting against Panama on 27 June, surpassing Gary Lineker's long-standing record.
Kane is England's captain and all-time record goalscorer with more than 100 international goals. He plays as a centre-forward for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, having joined from Tottenham Hotspur for a reported £100 million in August 2023. At Tottenham, Kane became the club's all-time top scorer and the second-highest scorer in Premier League history. He won his first major club honour, the DFB-Pokal, with Bayern in 2024.
His tournament record now spans three World Cups: at 2018 he won the Golden Boot as top scorer; at Euro 2020/21 and Euro 2024, England reached the final and lost on both occasions. At 32, this is regarded as his last realistic chance to win a major trophy with England, and the run to the last eight against Norway keeps that possibility alive.
