Background
Ghana is a West African republic and one of Africa's most stable democracies, independent since 1957 and a founding member of the African Union. It contributes consistently to international peacekeeping missions, deploying troops through the United Nations to conflict zones globally. Ghana is also a significant gold and cocoa exporter, with a population of approximately 34 million.
Two Ghanaian UNIFIL peacekeepers were critically wounded and a third suffered psychological trauma when their base at Qawzah, southern Lebanon, was struck. Ghana lodged a formal protest with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, demanding an immediate impartial investigation.
At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ghana's fan base faced severe access barriers, with roughly 150 Ghanaian fans denied US visas in a pattern affecting supporters from 27 of the 48 competing nations still requiring US visas; the State Department acknowledged it held no estimate of the attendance impact. On the pitch, Ghana reached the knockouts as one of a record nine African nations in the Round of 32, but their run ended in Kansas City on 3 July, beaten 1-0 by Colombia after Jhon Arias's 14th-minute strike; Colombia out-created Ghana 2.06 to 0.26 on expected goals despite the narrow scoreline.
