Background

Harry Kane is England's captain and all-time record goalscorer, with more than 100 international goals. He plays as a centre-forward, currently for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga after a £100 million move from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2023. At club level he is the Premier League's second-highest scorer in history and won his first major trophy, the DFB-Pokal, with Bayern in 2024.

Kane has been England's captain since 2020 under Gareth Southgate and continued under Thomas Tuchel. Head coach Tuchel selected him in England's final 26 for the 2026 World Cup on 22 May, sending Kane to a third World Cup — equalling Billy Wright's record for England appearances at the tournament . Kane was at the 2018 World Cup where he won the Golden Boot as top scorer, and at Euro 2020 and 2021 where England reached the final before losing to Italy on penalties. He was also at Euro 2024 where England again reached the final, losing to Spain.

The 2026 squad announcement became more notable for the omissions than the inclusions: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer — three of the Premier League's standout performers — were all Left out. Kane's place was never in doubt. He represents the consistent thread through England's recent tournament generations and, at 32 in the summer of 2026, is at the point where this World Cup may be his last realistic chance to win a senior international trophy.
