Background

Greece is a sovereign republic in southeastern Europe, a NATO member since 1952 and a founding member of the European Union. It controls the Aegean Sea and hosts the Souda Bay naval base in Crete, one of the most strategically significant facilities in the eastern Mediterranean. Greece operates the world's largest commercial shipping fleet, accounting for roughly one-fifth of global merchant tonnage.

The Iran conflict has pulled Greece into the war through shipping, air defence, and domestic politics. Greece's Panhellenic Seamen's Federation called a 24-hour nationwide strike as at least ten Greek-flagged vessels with 85 crew were stranded in the Persian Gulf . A Greek-operated Patriot PAC-3 battery on the ELDYSA mission in Saudi Arabia intercepted two Iranian Ballistic Missiles targeting Yanbu, its first combat engagement since 2021 .

Greece sits at the intersection of three risks: economic exposure through shipping, military exposure through NATO commitments, and political exposure at home. Iran explicitly named Greece among countries within range of its Shahab-3 missiles , while over 1,300 protesters in Athens demanded closure of Souda Bay . Whether Athens can honour its NATO obligations without inflaming domestic opinion is the central tension.
