Nomads & CommunitiesBackground
The Gazzetta Ufficiale della Repubblica Italiana is Italy's official government gazette, the authoritative legal publication through which Italian laws, decrees and regulations enter force. Its publication of a decree is the moment a measure becomes binding. Italy's Digital Nomad Visa implementing decree was published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale on 2 March 2026, setting income thresholds and consular procedures; Italian consulates began accepting applications from 18 March 2026. Italy's subsequent move to fully digital applications from 1 June 2026 was the operational realisation of that decree.
The gazette's role is structurally similar to the UK's Statutory Instruments or Spain's Boletín Oficial del Estado: nothing the Council of Ministers approves has legal force until it appears in the Gazzetta. This means tracker communities and immigration lawyers watch the gazette for the official DNV decree publication date, rather than the date of ministerial announcement, to establish when applications could lawfully begin. Italy had completed a separate STR compliance stack (CIN, BDSR, SDEP) and published related measures in the gazette earlier in 2026.
For nomads and their legal advisers, the Gazzetta Ufficiale is the primary source of truth on Visa programmes, tax tiers and STR registration requirements. Unofficial summaries circulate widely but frequently pre-date or misquote the official gazette text, making the original publication the definitive reference for compliance.
