Background

Druzhkivka is an industrial city in Donetsk Oblast, located approximately 30 km north of Kostiantynivka and within the cluster of towns that form part of Ukraine's northern Donetsk defensive zone. The city sits within the broader area where Russian forces have been pressing south along the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk axis, making it strategically relevant as part of the so-called Fortress Belt of fortified Ukrainian positions in the region.

The city has seen intensifying Russian aerial and artillery pressure as Moscow's spring 2026 offensive targets the Pokrovsk and Donetsk axes. Neighbouring Kramatorsk — roughly 25 km to the south-east — sustained a Russian airstrike on 8 March 2026 that killed one person and damaged nearly 40 houses. ISW assessed on 31 March that Russian forces are unlikely to seize the Fortress Belt in 2026 after daily engagements declined from a peak of 163 to 120 on the Pokrovsk axis.

Druzhkivka had a pre-war population of roughly 60,000 and served as a light industrial and engineering centre. Much of its civilian population has been evacuated since 2022. Its proximity to the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk urban cluster means it forms part of the rear logistics zone for Ukrainian forces holding the northern Donetsk front.
