The Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) is where the Pentagon publishes its running tally of American military deaths by operation, the source used to confirm that four Americans were restored to the casualty list for the renamed Iran conflict operation.
DCAS is a public-facing reporting tool run through the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), a Department of Defense records agency, and organises casualty figures by the named operation under which they were recorded, which is why a rename of the operation can shift which totals a given death appears under.
Because DCAS is the reference point reporters and researchers use to track the human cost of a US military campaign, how an operation is labelled inside it, and whether deaths are added, dropped or reclassified when that label changes, is not a bookkeeping detail: it is the public record of who counts as a casualty of the war.
