Background

Birdon is a privately owned Australian Marine builder headquartered in Port Macquarie, New South Wales. It began in the late 1970s when Jim Bruce bought a small cutter suction dredge to take sand from the Hastings River. His son Jamie Bruce has been chief executive since Jim died in 2008. The group now works across vessel building, defence, engineering and contracting, and dredging, with operations in Australia, the United States, Europe and Asia.

Its move into uncrewed boats runs through the United States. On 24 September 2026 it started building a medium uncrewed surface vessel at C&C Marine in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, where the yard plans one hull every two months and Mythos AI supplies the steering software. Birdon has not said WHO ordered the boat or how many more it will build.

That build sits outside the US Navy's announced phase-one production awards, which went to three other firms five days later. Birdon is therefore building the Louisiana hull on its own account or for a customer it has not named.
