Bezalel Smotrich

Bezalel Smotrich is Israel's Finance Minister and the founder and leader of the Religious Zionism (HaTzionit HaDatit) party. He has been a dominant force in Benjamin Netanyahu's governing Coalition since the 2022 Israeli election, giving the FAR right effective veto power over key security and settlement decisions. Smotrich also holds authority over the Civil Administration in the West Bank, giving him an unusually direct role in settlement expansion that goes beyond the Finance Ministry's conventional REMIT.

Smotrich's political identity is defined by maximalist territorial claims, opposition to a Palestinian state, and a belief that Israeli security demands cannot be compromised by international diplomatic settlements. Following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding on 15 June 2026, he called for ten buildings in Beirut to be destroyed for every drone fired by Hezbollah at Israeli positions, directly contradicting the Ceasefire terms and putting him at odds publicly with Prime Minister Netanyahu . National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir made similar rejections, illustrating the breadth of hard-right opposition to any deal that did not include Israel as a signatory.

Smotrich's public statements carry weight beyond rhetoric because his Coalition position gives him leverage to trigger early elections or block legislation. His rejection of the Iran memorandum signals a continuing domestic constraint on Israel's ability to abide by Ceasefire conditions, particularly regarding Lebanon.
