Background

Bethan Rhys Roberts is a bilingual Welsh and English political presenter at BBC Cymru Wales, where she co-anchors Newyddion on S4C (the Welsh-language nightly news) and co-hosts Wales Live, the weekly current affairs programme on BBC One Wales. She moderated the BBC One Wales and S4C Senedd leaders debates ahead of the 7 May 2026 Senedd election, questioning party leaders on immigration, NHS funding, and Coalition formation under the new closed-list PR system.

Rhys Roberts was born in Bangor, north Wales, to a bilingual family. She holds a degree in French and Italian and studied European journalism in Paris, where she worked as a freelance journalist before moving to London as a BBC Parliamentary Correspondent. She has covered stories from war zones in Bosnia and Turkey to refugee camps in Sudan. She presented BBC Radio Wales's Good Morning Wales from 2007 to 2013, was one of the first women to front BBC overnight election results in 2015, and received the prestigious BAFTA Cymru Siân Phillips Award in 2025 for her contribution to Welsh broadcasting.

Rhys Roberts's bilingual presence bridging S4C and BBC One Wales audiences makes her one of the most significant voices in Welsh political journalism across both language communities.
