The sequence is highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b, recovered from migratory birds in Western Australia. That material buys assay validation. A diagnostic PCR test finds a virus by matching short primer sequences to fixed stretches of its genome, and a strain that has drifted at exactly those positions returns a clean negative from a working machine. Laboratories along the East Asian-Australasian flyway can now check their primers against the lineage that actually arrived, instead of against a European reference collected seasons and several mutations ago. Australia was the last populated continent without H5N1, so it meets the virus with every other country's decade of experience already written down.

Read the animal counts as two separate streams. WPRO (WHO's Western Pacific Regional Office) logged 44 new Australian wild-bird outbreaks for 7 to 13 August, holding 60 cases and 47 deaths, in South Australia, Victoria and the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone 2. The published genome came from Western Australia, a different corner of the continent, so that sequence does not describe the birds in this tally. WOAH's Situation Report 85, released on 17 August with July data, counted 16 new poultry outbreaks worldwide and 72 in non-poultry birds and mammals across 14 countries, with about 1,528,120 birds dead or culled, most of them in the Americas 3.

Australia's position changes on a poultry number, not a wild-bird one. Wild-bird detections mean the virus has arrived; commercial flock outbreaks mean it has established, and July's global tally shows what establishment costs. Human risk stays low in the meantime, roughly where the region's other avian flu sits. The same Western Pacific bulletin logged a girl under five in Yunnan Province with A(H9N2), symptom onset on 28 July, backyard poultry exposure, hospitalised, discharged, no secondary cases 4.
