The Royal Navy said on 5 August that Exercise Dragon Rider had linked a modified Wildcat helicopter, Royal Marines, ship commanders and several aerial and surface drones across more than 200 miles of southern England 1. Operators flew the drones over a mobile ad-hoc network, a self-forming radio mesh in which every node relays for the others, of the kind already tested in Ukraine. The Royal Navy intends to take the same control arrangement to satellite range next, so that the operator need not stand within 200 miles of the drone.
Dragon Rider tested the control layer rather than the aircraft. A mesh has no single mast to jam or bomb, and it lets a Wildcat crew, a marine on a beach and a commander at sea share one picture without a purpose-built datalink between each pair. Britain committed GBP 5 billion to drones and autonomy in June under its Defence Investment Plan , and a trial of this kind decides which layer of that stack the money reaches first. The trial matters for procurement rather than for tactics: a fleet that fixes its control layer first can change the drones underneath it later, which is a useful property to hold when component supply lines are being redrawn by tariff and licence in the same month.
