ZDATA is a Malaysian data-centre operator running a 300 MW facility at Iskandar Puteri, in the state of Johor.
The company told Reuters its site runs solely on treated wastewater and said it is finalising a renewable-energy supply deal with state utility Tenaga Nasional, the first named-operator compliance response since Johor halted approvals for water-intensive data-centre projects. Local residents blamed ZDATA's build-out for a drop in mains water pressure early in 2026, a link the company rejects.
As the first operator to put its name to a water-use defence, ZDATA's position is being read as a template other Johor developers will need to match to keep building.
