Zarqa Governorate

Zarqa Governorate, roughly 100km east of Amman, hosts Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, also known as Al-Azraq, a joint Royal Jordanian Air Force and US Air Force installation that Iran has struck three times during the war. On 17 July an Iranian Ballistic missile and drone attack there killed two American service members, the first US combat deaths of the conflict.

The base sits well inland of Jordan's Red Sea coast. Earlier strikes on 10 June and 9 July were fully or largely intercepted; the 17 July attack, in which Jordan says its air defences took down eight of ten incoming missiles, was the first to get through. Amman's official account still reports no Jordanian casualties or damage, separate from the American losses CENTCOM has confirmed.
