Volker Türk

Volker Türk called for urgent action on 24 July 2026 over merchant crews stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, the shipping lane between Iran and Oman carrying a fifth of the world's oil. His office counted at least 6,000 crew aboard roughly 400 vessels, including at least nine abandoned ships whose 93 crew have been Left without food, water, fuel, medical care or communication since the war began.

Türk has served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the office responsible for OHCHR, since 2022. An Austrian lawyer by training, he spent much of his career at UNHCR before taking the top human rights post. OHCHR separately recorded 17 civilian seafarer deaths since the conflict began, a distinct tally from the Pentagon's military casualty figures for the same war.

His intervention put a human face and a hard number on a maritime crisis that had until then been reported mainly through shipping-insurance and oil-price coverage. The abandoned-vessel detail, crews with no food or communication for weeks, gives editors and diplomats alike a concrete humanitarian claim to act on rather than an abstract risk premium.
