US Midterms 2026: Judge dismisses DOJ's Georgia voter suitBackground
Victoria Marie Calvert is a judge of the US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Her 30 September 2026 dismissal of the Justice Department's Georgia voter-list suit, by Democracy Docket's count the department's 26th straight loss in such cases, placed her among the judges deciding how FAR federal officials can reach into state voter files.
President Joe Biden nominated her. The Senate confirmed her on 22 March 2022 and her Commission issued on 5 April 2022. Born in 1981 in the Bronx, she studied at Duke University and New York University School of Law. She practised privately in Atlanta from 2006 to 2012, then spent a decade as a staff attorney at the Federal Defender Program in Atlanta before joining the bench.
Calvert bars a second attempt
Judge Calvert threw out United States v. Raffensperger on 30 September 2026. In her reading, Title III of the 1960 Act leaves Georgia's privacy statute intact, which lets the state keep birth dates, Social Security numbers and licence numbers out of the department's hands.
She dismissed without leave to amend, so the department cannot simply refile the claim in her court. Her order added Georgia to a long run of defeats for the department's push for state voter files, which Democracy Docket counts as 26 straight losses.
