UK Defence Intelligence said on 7 October 2026 that a Ukrainian Sargan-3000 SEA drone destroyed a Russian one-way-attack SEA drone in the Black Sea on 12 September, which it judged "almost certainly" the first direct clash between the two sides' uncrewed surface vessels.

Autonomous Systems: Land & Sea: Ukrainian USV destroys a Russian USVBackground
Defence Intelligence is the all-source intelligence organisation of the UK Ministry of Defence. It began in 1964 as the Defence Intelligence Staff and employs about 5,000 civilian and military staff. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 it has declassified assessments of the war for public release.
Those public updates now track the SEA-drone war. In an update dated 7 October 2026, it said a Ukrainian Sargan-3000, which carries a mounted gun, destroyed a Russian explosive-carrying uncrewed surface vessel in the Black Sea on 12 September. It judged the clash "almost certainly" the first time the two countries' uncrewed surface vessels had engaged each other directly, and rated it "highly unlikely" that the Russian craft had any counter-drone defence.
The agency grades its assessments in fixed probability language, from "highly unlikely" to "almost certainly". The first-engagement judgement rests on this single assessment.
