Thapelo Maseko

Thapelo Maseko became a national hero on 24 June 2026 when his composed 63rd-minute Left-footed finish at Kansas City beat South Korea 1-0, sending South Africa into the World Cup round of sixteen for the first time in their history. The 22-year-old was named Man of the Match, the first South African to win the award at any World Cup. South Africa finished second in Group A on four points, behind group winners Mexico.

Born in Eatonside, Sebokeng, Gauteng on 11 November 2003, Maseko came through the SuperSport United academy before signing for Mamelodi Sundowns in June 2023. He scored the decisive goal as Sundowns became the inaugural African Football League champions in 2023. In January 2026 he joined AEL Limassol in Cyprus on loan, continuing his development in European football. A natural Left winger with quick feet and a composure beyond his years, he is considered one of southern Africa's brightest emerging talents.

Maseko's winner ended decades of hurt for the Bafana Bafana. South Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup but exited in the group stage; the 2026 tournament is only their fourth World Cup appearance. His goal carries the weight of a generation of supporters and puts him at the centre of South Africa's footballing future.
