UK Startups and InnovationBackground
Established in 1974 and wholly owned by the Singapore government, Temasek manages a portfolio of approximately S$389bn (around $290bn USD) across technology, financials, life sciences, consumer and real assets. Unlike many sovereign wealth funds, it operates as an active investor, often taking board representation and engaging with management strategy rather than simply holding passive stakes. Established holdings include Alibaba, DBS Group and Singapore Airlines.
Temasek's presence in British and European deep-tech rounds is one strand of a much larger global mandate: the fund interprets Singapore's long-term wellbeing broadly enough to include global food system resilience and frontier AI, which is why it backs UK agri-biotech alongside AI-materials and AI-for-engineering companies on both sides of The Atlantic. It is a global investor with UK positions, not a UK-focused fund; its stakes sit inside a portfolio spanning Asia, the Gulf and the Americas.
Temasek doubles down on CuspAI
Temasek co-led CuspAI's 2025 Series A, worth more than $100m at a $520m valuation, alongside NEA, then returned as an investor when the Cambridge AI-materials firm's $450m Series B closed on 20 July 2026 at a $2.6bn valuation.
The repeat backing shows a pattern rather than a one-off bet: Temasek treats CuspAI as a compounding position it tops up as the valuation climbs, mirroring its approach to PhysicsX, where it led a $300m Series c on 8 June 2026 that doubled the London firm's prior valuation to $2.4bn.
Foreign capital keeps leading rounds
Temasek's stakes sit inside a broader pattern this cycle: PhysicsX's $300m round on 8 June and Orbital's $50m raise on 28 May both closed without a domestic lead investor, and Temasek itself anchored the PhysicsX round.
For Temasek this is simply its own mandate at work, food-security and frontier-AI bets that happen to sit in Britain rather than a UK-focused strategy; the fund also backed Tropic Biosciences' $105m Series c in March 2026, the agri-biotech end of the same thesis.
