South Tyneside is a metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear, centred on South Shields and including Jarrow, Hebburn, Boldon, Cleadon and Whitburn. Its council provides both district and county functions, making it responsible for services including education, social care, housing, planning, waste and local roads.
The borough has held those combined local-government functions since Tyne and Wear County Council was abolished in 1986. Some services are shared across Tyne and Wear, while strategic responsibilities sit with the North East Mayoral Combined Authority.
