Background

King's Lynn and West Norfolk is a non-metropolitan district with borough status in western Norfolk. Its borough council provides district services, including planning, housing, waste collection, licensing and leisure, while Norfolk County Council provides education, social care and most roads.

The borough includes King's Lynn, Downham Market, Hunstanton and more than 100 rural parishes. Its coastline faces The Wash and the North Sea. Created as West Norfolk in 1974, it gained borough status and adopted its present name in 1981.

The council's political make-up gives local elections lasting relevance to the borough's services and priorities. Reform UK's August 2026 gains in Snettisham and Heacham added a new electoral pressure within the area.

Reform gains reshape local contest

On 6 August, Reform UK gained Snettisham and Heacham in by-elections held on 30 July and 6 August. The two wards place the party inside King's Lynn and West Norfolk's electoral map, rather than leaving its Norfolk support as a result elsewhere in the county.

For the borough, those gains matter because council elections shape who controls district services and who speaks for coastal and rural communities. Reform took 35% to 56% across four reported wins and holds in the wider set of contests, although the evidence does not establish how durable that support will prove in West Norfolk.
