Samsung Heavy Industries is a South Korean shipbuilder founded on 5 August 1974 and part of the Samsung Group. Samsung Heavy Industries builds at its main yard on Geoje. It builds container ships, LNG carriers, drillships and floating production units, and is one of South Korea's three largest shipbuilders with Hanwha and Hyundai Heavy Industries.
It has developed its own autonomous navigation system, Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS). In September 2021 SAS steered clear of a collision between two autonomous vessels off Gageo Island, which the company called the first at-SEA demonstration of its kind.
In August 2026 it signed a memorandum with the class society ClassNK, Evergreen Marine and Weathernews for a crewed commercial navigation trial. Class-society verification of this kind is the route by which such systems reach paying customers.
