Why did Vox Media split into two companies in 2026?
Background
Ryan Pauley was named president of PMX Global on 18 June 2026 when Penske Media Corporation acquired The Verge, Eater, SB Nation, Popsugar, The Dodo, and Thrillist from Vox Media, consolidating the titles into a new Penske subsidiary. Pauley, who had been Vox Media's president, moved with the portfolio to become PMX's operational lead: the most senior non-founder executive in one of the largest single expansions in PMC's history.
Before leading Vox Media as president, Pauley held senior commercial and revenue roles in digital publishing. His move from Vox Media to PMX Global preserves continuity across the acquired brands: he carries existing advertiser relationships, editorial contracts, and audience data infrastructure into the PMC structure without a transition gap.
The acquisition split Vox Media in two: the PMC portfolio under Pauley covers The Verge, Eater, SB Nation, and the consumer publishing titles; James Murdoch's Lupa Systems separately acquired New York magazine, Vox.com, and the Vox Media Podcast Network. Pauley's task at PMX is to extract commercial value from specialist audiences, principally The Verge's technology readership and SB Nation's sports communities, within PMC's video-first and events-led editorial model.
