Harwell

The UK Biological Security Strategy's 14 July implementation report allocated GBP 250m to Harwell as part of a GBP 1.83bn network of national biosecurity centres, alongside GBP 1bn at Weybridge and GBP 580m at Dstl Porton Down. That investment sits awkwardly against a separate squeeze on the site's Science budget: UKRI confirmed on 9 July that STFC will cut national-laboratory funding by 58% over four years and mothball the Clara electron-beam facility, even as its estates budget rises 27%.

Harwell is an Oxfordshire Science campus hosting several of the UK's national physics and space laboratories, run by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). It is now simultaneously gaining a biosecurity mandate and losing core research funding, a split that reflects competing government priorities on the same site.
