The Henry Royce Institute was established in 2015 by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, following then-Chancellor George Osborne's 2014 funding announcement for advanced materials Science under the Northern Powerhouse programme. It is hosted by the University of Manchester on a hub-and-spoke model, with eight founding partners (Imperial College London, Cambridge, Leeds, Liverpool, Oxford, Sheffield, the National Nuclear Laboratory and the UK Atomic Energy Authority) and two associate partners, Cranfield University and the University of Strathclyde.
Its REMIT is to accelerate commercial exploitation of UK materials research across low-carbon power, infrastructure and mobility, digital and communications, the circular economy, and health and wellbeing, positioning it as core national infrastructure for turning advanced-materials research, including battery technology, into UK manufacturing capability.
On 14 September 2026 UK Research and Innovation allocated £162m to two research institutes, of which £95m went to Royce, alongside £67.7m for the Rosalind Franklin Institute.
