Real Change PAC

Real Change PAC's Republican ties, reported as circumstantial in early June, were confirmed by FEC filings made public on 20 June 2026: Real Change is covertly funded by Conservative Americans PAC, a Republican vehicle itself bankrolled by the American Prosperity Alliance, alongside two sibling liberal-branded vehicles, Lead Left and Blue California. The aim of the network is to lift weaker candidates in Democratic primaries so Republicans face softer opponents in November.

Real Change had already surfaced in Roll Call's 4 June reporting, which flagged WinRed metadata on its website as a circumstantial fingerprint before the funding chain was confirmed. In Maine's 2nd Congressional District it spent $402,000 opposing DCCC-backed Joe Baldacci, with the apparent aim of lifting state auditor Matt Dunlap, who held only $93,000 in cash, into the nomination to face Republican former governor Paul LePage in a seat rated Likely Republican. Project 218 countered with a $542,000 spend backing Baldacci.

The tactic, spending inside an opponent's primary to select a weaker November rival, does not always work: sibling vehicle Lead Left spent more than $750,000 boosting Maureen Galindo in the Texas 35th Democratic primary, and she still lost the runoff to Johnny Garcia by close to 30 points. A Conservative Americans PAC spokesperson defended the operation as levelling the playing field after years of Democratic meddling; the DCCC counters that Garcia's landslide proves it backfired.
