Nomads & CommunitiesBackground
The Puerta del Sol is Madrid's central square and the seat of the regional government of the Community of Madrid, which occupies the Real Casa de Correos on its south side. A plaque in front of that building marks Kilometre Zero, the point from which Spain's radial national roads are measured.
Madrid's protest movements have long gathered here: the square held the 15-M movement's encampment in May 2011, and in 2026 it hosted a housing encampment. Infobae reported that the CAMP moved to the Congress of Deputies for the vote on Spain's two rent decrees, which deputies refused to validate on 2 October 2026.
The square carries symbolic weight but no legislative power. National housing law is made in Congress, while the regional government that sits in the square administers the housing powers devolved to the Community of Madrid.
Its housing camp shadowed the rent vote
Infobae reported that the housing encampment based in the Puerta del Sol relocated to the Congress of Deputies to follow the vote on Spain's two rent decrees. Deputies refused to validate both on 2 October, three days after the cabinet approved them on 29 September.
For the square, the result left the protest with no pending national measure to watch. The decrees' rules on seasonal rentals and five-year lease renewals lapsed, together with their tourist-let tax and their limit on rent rises between temporary contracts. As of 3 October nothing had replaced them, so the CAMP's housing demands return to a square that faces the regional government's own front door.
