Why is Podemos blocking Spain's housing decree?
Is Podemos still part of Spain's governing coalition?
Background
Podemos, junior partner turned estranged critic of Spain's governing Coalition, said on 8 July it will not support the government's housing decree if it grants landlords IRPF tax deductions for cutting rents, the price Junts demands for its seven votes. Secretary-general Ione Belarra put the veto in personal terms: backing it "actively or passively" is off the table.
Founded in January 2014 by Pablo Iglesias out of the 15-M anti-austerity protests, Podemos built a Left-wing populist platform that peaked with the 2015 "Podemos surge" into national politics. It ran on a joint ticket with Sumar in 2023 before breaking away on 5 December that year, its MPs moving into the mixed parliamentary group.
That rupture leaves Podemos outside the formal Coalition it once anchored, free to veto the decree without collapsing the government, and with no fixed timetable for a deal.
